Place & story

Earthworks in the townland

The 1998 Record of Monuments and Places identifies earthworks in Lurgan, in the barony of Frenchpark. It also lists a possible enclosure as a separate entry. These recorded features belong to the fields around the locality. Their cautious classifications preserve the distinction between recognised earthworks and an enclosure whose identification remained uncertain; the entries do not establish construction dates. [2]

Names in the tithe books

The National Archives' index to the 1825 tithe applotment books places Lurgan in Kilcolagh parish. Its entries include the surname Beirn, with forenames reduced to initials, while other entries use Beirne and combine Lurgan with Drishahan. The differing spellings and grouped place descriptions are part of the surviving agricultural record, rather than evidence that every indexed entry represents a separate household. [3]

A population halved

The 1851 census records 148 people in Lurgan townland in 1841 and 74 a decade later. Inhabited houses fell from 27 to 14 over the same period. These figures describe the wider townland, not a separately enumerated village. They document a sharp contraction during the Famine decade, although the table does not separate deaths, departures or other causes of the change. [4]
