Place & story
The lodge beside the estate entrance
Rahelly’s gate lodge is a small building with unusually conspicuous details: triangular openings, patterned timber bargeboards and an entrance porch projecting from its front. The architectural inventory dates it to about 1890. A taller rear return adds space behind the single-storey front and attic. Sligo County Council identifies the lodge with Cashelgarran, linking this roadside building to the neighbouring Rahelly estate and the larger house beyond. [2] [4]
A house leased from the Gore Booth estate
University of Galway’s Landed Estates research records Francis Barber leasing a house at Rahelly from the Gore Booth estate at the time of Griffith’s Valuation. The property was then valued at £25. The later house fell into ruin, but the university’s record also documents its restoration. That sequence is important when reading older descriptions: the National Inventory’s 2004 account describes a roofless structure, while later records show a house brought back into use. [3] [5]
