Place & story
The nineteenth-century school
Corballa National School traces its first recorded school to 1845, close to the present site. By 1870 it enrolled 228 pupils, although average attendance was only 55. A replacement building was completed in 1882 and gained another classroom in 1909. That school continued in use until 1980; the school’s own history identifies the old building across the road from its successor. [2]
Amalgamation and a new building
Corballa and Carrowgarry schools amalgamated in 1968 after numbers declined at Carrowgarry. A new Corballa building opened in November 1980, with four classrooms and a general-purpose room. Local fundraising supplied one ninth of its £110,000 cost. The opening was performed by Agriculture Minister Ray MacSharry, with Sally Gallagher serving as principal and Fr Martin Halloran chairing the board of management. [2]
