Place & story

A residence recorded in 1837

Samuel Lewis named Lisserlough among the principal residences of Killaraght parish in 1837, identifying Jacob Powell as its occupant. This contemporary entry establishes the house’s place in the parish at that date, without establishing when the surviving building was constructed. [2]

A fort in the namebook

The official placename archive preserves Ordnance Survey notes from 1836 describing a large old fort near the western side of Lisserlough townland. These remarks record a feature known to the surveyors, alongside their collection of different written forms of the place’s name. [3]

Fields visible from the air

The Archaeological Survey records a group of small fields in Lisserlough visible on an aerial photograph, with some also shown on the 1914 six-inch map. Its 2012 record reports the fields as levelled and no longer visible at ground level, judging them likely to date after 1700. [4]
