Place & story

The Chadwick family seat

Ballinard was a Chadwick family seat during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Landed Estates database records John Chadwick there in 1814 and William Chadwick in 1837. The Ordnance Survey Name Books identify Austin Sadlier as resident in 1840, while Griffith’s Valuation places a value of thirty-three pounds on the house, held from the Earl of Portarlington. The Chadwicks were again recorded at Ballinard at the beginning of the twentieth century. These entries preserve changes in occupancy without implying that every resident owned the estate outright. [2]

An older dwelling behind a later front

The national architectural survey dates Ballinard’s six-bay, two-storey front block to around 1820. Behind it survives an older dwelling, possibly seventeenth-century, with a different roof form and a substantial limestone chimney. The later front has a hipped slate roof, sash windows and an added entrance porch. Outbuildings form a courtyard to the north, including one with a limestone bellcote. The contrast between the formal front and older rear makes the house a record of successive changes rather than a single building campaign. [3]

A family account of courtyard and kitchen

Edward Marion Chadwick’s 1914 family history describes a paved courtyard surrounded by stables and working buildings, approached through an arched gateway. His account gives particular attention to a refitted kitchen, with cooking ranges and an encaustic-tile floor, which he remembered as one of the house’s most striking rooms. This is a family perspective rather than a measured survey, but it adds a useful domestic detail to the architectural record: improvements were made to everyday working spaces as well as the principal façade.
