Place & story
Saint Mary’s on Carrig Hill
Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, also known as Carrig Church, bears the date 1833. Designed by John Hanley, it has a simple cruciform plan, with pointed windows and doors giving the exterior its Gothic character. The altar end is more elaborate: paired Corinthian columns and pilasters support a carved timber pediment above a marble altar and tabernacle. The church forms a group with the nearby school and parochial house on Carrig Hill. [2]
A schoolhouse adapted for successive generations
Carrig National School was built in 1914 and opened the following year as a mixed school with two teachers. A third classroom arrived in 1963, alongside toilets, a cloakroom, a water tower and an outdoor shelter. Further extensions followed in 1981 and 1983. A larger programme completed in 2017 combined new classrooms with refurbishment of the original schoolhouse and improved play areas, continuing the use of the early twentieth-century building within a substantially expanded school. [3]
Monsea Muintir na Tíre Hall
Monsea Muintir na Tíre Hall provided Ballycommon and surrounding communities with a village meeting place from 1963. Photographer P. L. Chadwick documented it beside the R495 in September 2011, recording that it had been altered and extended. The hall adds a secular community building to a district whose church and school had already served successive generations. [4]
