Place & story

A school’s surviving records

Ballyneale National School keeps a collection of pupil photographs stretching back to 1926. Its old registers, dating from 1876, were restored with money raised locally. The school identifies Tom Kiely as a former pupil, and uses history trails to Ballyneale Castle and Kilmurray graveyard to introduce children to the surrounding landscape. These surviving records give the village’s educational history a material foundation, alongside its much better known sporting association. [2]

People & connections

Tom Kiely’s all-round victory

Ballyneale native Tom Kiely won the ten-event All-Around Championship at St Louis on 4 July 1904, an event recognised as part of that year’s Olympic programme. After crossing the Atlantic in the Teutonic, he trained in New York before travelling west. Rain made the competition especially demanding. Kiely recovered from sixth place after three events to win, helped by victories in the hammer, hurdles and heavy-weight throw. GAA officials welcomed him home at Queenstown that October. [3]

Remembering the champion

A monument and interpretive panel in Ballyneill commemorate Kiely, known locally as the Champ. The Lingaun Valley heritage project places his achievement in the political setting of pre-independence Ireland, recording the local tradition that he declared himself a representative of Tipperary and Ireland. The memorial brings an international sporting career back into the village landscape where it began. [4]
