Place & story

A railway village from 1860

Birdhill station opened on 23 July 1860. It later served as the junction for a branch to Killaloe. The village’s heritage account distinguishes the lost station-master’s house from surviving features including the arched road bridge, signal box and entrance gates. A railway garden was created for the station’s 150th anniversary, giving the transport site a further community use. [2]

The creamery and its milk suppliers

The local co-operative creamery operated from 1914 to 1987 and served more than a hundred milk suppliers. Its working life ended after amalgamations, but milk churns displayed outside the former store recall the daily deliveries. In 2006, local artist Anne Barry painted murals of country life on the building, turning the old dairy site into a record of its farming surroundings. [3] [4]

Folklore & tradition

Oisín and the Éan Fionn

John O’Connor’s stainless-steel Éan Fionn sculpture was erected on the Village Green in 2002 after an open design competition. Its wounded bird refers to the local Oisín tradition explained on the plinth. Anne Barry and the local Youth Club revisited the same story in a Community Park mural in 2014. The legend is thus represented in two modern public artworks. [2] [4]
