Place & story

Bouladuff House at the crossroads

Bouladuff House dates from about 1850 and occupies a prominent position at the village crossroads. The architectural inventory records a symmetrical two-storey frontage with decorative plaster bands and fluted window surrounds. A round-headed doorway and fanlight form the centrepiece, while cast-iron gates and railings mark the boundary. These surviving details give the building its particular character despite later replacement windows and doors. [2]

People & connections

Laurence Fanning, publican and returned emigrant

Family research identifies Laurence Francis Fanning as a publican and farmer at Bouladuff after years spent in the United States. Born at nearby Lissaroon in 1874, he eventually settled here with his wife Bridget. The family's published records include a photograph of him outside his public house and a 1911 census return. His working life connects the village's trade with the repeated journeys between Ireland and America made by local emigrants. [3]

The village recorded in 2008

The 2008 TidyTowns adjudicator recorded an active local committee and the national school's involvement in recycling. The report noted the school's 2005 extension, improvements to the church grounds and careful maintenance of the older and newer cemeteries. It also described bridge date signs and the local GAA grounds. Read as a dated record, the assessment documents the combined work of residents, schoolchildren and community organisations on the village's public spaces. [4]
