Kilronan’s small Gothic church
Kilronan Church was built in 1847 as a compact Church of Ireland building with a two-bay nave and a smaller chancel. Its stone walls, narrow pointed windows and bellcote give it a Gothic character, while Y-shaped glazing bars survive in the timber windows. The national architectural inventory records it as disused and notes an attribution to William Tinsley, associated with an account of its erection by Abraham Coates of nearby Glenahiry Lodge. That architectural attribution remains qualified.[2]
A centre shaped by a community questionnaire
The Ballymacarbry Community Centre and Hostel began with a questionnaire circulated in 2003. Residents saw a hostel as a way of attracting visitors while earning money to support shared facilities. A local committee developed the project, combining fundraising with grant aid, and the centre opened in 2007. Its accommodation and kitchen sit alongside meeting rooms, a sports hall, gym and theatre, bringing visitors’ needs and local activities together in one building.[3]
Football and hurling at the Mill Field
Ballymacarbry’s ladies footballers won forty-two successive Waterford county titles between 1982 and 2023. Their wider sporting community centres on the Mill Field, also home to Fourmilewater hurlers and The Nire footballers. Those two men’s clubs draw from the same pool of players and have shared a management team since 2014. Fourmilewater reached their first senior county hurling final in 2026, their centenary year, adding another milestone to the area’s sporting history.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
