Place & story

Teaching in the coach house

The Ursuline community settled at Elysium after earlier homes at Waterpark and Newgrove. Its school history recalls thirty boarders arriving with the sisters and a large coach house in the garden being used to teach poor children locally. In 1842 a purpose-built Saint John's National School replaced that improvised classroom. The account shows how boarding education and schooling for children from the surrounding district developed alongside one another. [2]

The nineteenth-century school buildings

The architectural inventory dates the substantial fifteen-bay school building at Saint Angela's to about 1875. Its symmetrical frontage has a projecting central section crowned by a pediment and cross, with a round-headed entrance and a fanlight. The garden survey records older boundary walls, mature trees and the sisters' graveyard with cast-iron crosses. Together these features preserve the setting of a large educational institution that grew through successive additions. [3] [4]

Saint Angela’s and the free education scheme

Saint Anne's Secondary Day School, established in 1892, merged with the boarding school under the free education scheme in 1967. The combined institution became Saint Angela's Post Primary School. A new building opened in 1981 under the name Brescia, recalling the Italian city where Angela Merici founded the Ursulines. These developments changed both the organisation of education and the physical scale of the Ballytruckle campus. [2]
