Place & story
From milk collection to cheese
Kilmeaden Co-operative Society began in 1916 when one hundred local farmers formed a society with help from the Irish Agricultural Organisation. Its creamery received its first milk that August. Construction of a cheese factory began in 1965 on land opposite the general store, and cheddar was initially sold locally to farmers and co-operative employees. Production later moved to Ballyragget in County Kilkenny, while the Kilmeaden name remained on the cheese. [2]
Railway heritage at Kilmeadan
Waterford Suir Valley Railway opened in 2003, bringing a new narrow-gauge heritage operation to the old railway corridor. The Irish Railway Records Society donated the original Kilmeadan station sign for the opening. The operator’s account records an 1878 platform and a converted Irish Rail Mark 2 carriage serving as the ticket office. These reused railway features connect the community project with the station’s earlier life. [3]
