Place & story
The church and its predecessor
Patrick Power’s 1937 diocesan history dates Knockanore’s church to 1826, during Father Michael O’Brien’s pastorate. The cross-shaped building replaced a thatched chapel about a quarter of a mile to the south-east. Power records its dedication to the Sacred Heart by Bishop Foran in 1853. His account distinguishes the construction of the building from its later dedication, placing the church within a longer sequence of local places of worship. [2]
Raising money for a new school
In November 1944, the Dungarvan Observer advertised a card drive for Knockanore’s new-school building fund. Planned for 17 December in the existing school, the event was presented as a way for parishioners to support urgently needed accommodation. The notice records the practical work of fundraising rather than the completion of the replacement building, showing a local committee seeking small contributions through a shared social occasion. [3]
Cheesemaking in the wider parish
Eamonn and Patricia Lonergan began making cheese on their family farm in 1987. Their premises at Ballyneety, in the wider Knockanore parish, use milk from the farm’s Friesian herd for cheddar-style farmhouse cheese. The family’s own account describes traditional cheddaring and an oak-smoking process using wood sourced around Lismore. This diversification links local dairy farming with food processing under the Knockanore name. [4] [5]
