Place & story
The mansion of 1836
The Lucas Scudmore family rebuilt Castleshane House as a substantial Jacobean-style mansion in 1836. It burned in 1920, leaving parts of its three-storey shell. The architectural inventory records projecting bays, curved gables, stone string courses and remnants of brick walls among the surviving features. The house now stands within forest owned by Coillte, while other parts of the former estate developed separate histories of ownership. [2]
Gardens and a belfry
North of the house, an older walled garden dating from around 1800 had a curved northern boundary. Another garden was added to the south around 1840. A slender decorative bell-tower, with a pointed opening and ornamental finials, remains a distinctive estate feature. The architectural survey records tennis courts occupying the southern garden and trees planted in the older enclosure, tracing changes from productive garden space to later uses. [3]
Mapping the estate
Monaghan County Museum holds an album of Castleshane estate maps based on surveys of 1838, 1869 and 1870. Robert Manning, the engineer associated with studies of water flow, surveyed the main estate in 1869, including the village and demesne. The maps identify tenants, land uses and acreages, alongside mills, lime kilns and other landscape features. The museum reported conservation funding for the album in its summer 2011 newsletter. [4]
