Place & story

The estate entrance

Coolderry was the seat of the Forster baronetcy and one of the principal estates in this part of Monaghan. Its former gate lodge, built around 1820, survives beside the old approach to Coolderry House. The architectural inventory records its later use as a dwelling, retaining a visible link with the estate after changes to the surrounding landscape. [2]

Iron columns and recessed corners

The single-storey lodge has an irregular plan with recessed corners beneath an overhanging slate roof. Cast-iron Corinthian columns stand on granite bases, accompanied by ornamental iron brackets. Sandstone frames its doors and windows, while diamond-pattern glazing survives in the upper lights. These details give a modest entrance building the elaborate character of a small garden pavilion.
