Place & story
From worship to community use
St Michael’s and St Victor’s church ceased holding Mass in September 1981, after structural problems prompted the building of a replacement church dedicated to St Lastra. Rather than demolish the old building, local people sought a new role for it. In 1999 the diocesan authorities leased it to the community development committee for sporting, recreational and social use. [2]
Restoring the building
Restoration began in November 1999 with volunteers and local FÁS workers. They removed internal plaster and exposed the stonework. The adapted building provided a hall, kitchen, storage, showers, a snooker room and viewing balcony. The development group also improved the village approaches with stone name markers and gates. [2]
