Place & story
A memorial beside the road
Balrath’s sixteenth-century wayside cross commemorates John Broin. One face bears the Crucifixion and the other a Pietà, with an inscription asking for prayer for Broin’s soul. A later inscription records work commissioned by Sir Andrew Aylmer and his wife Catherine in the 1720s. The cross thus combines its original devotional purpose with evidence of continued care more than a century later. [2]
Moving the cross
The cross formerly stood at Balrath crossroads and was incorporated into a stone wall during the nineteenth century. Road widening in 2006 required its relocation, and it now stands in nearby Ballymagarvey cemetery. Archaeological monitoring accompanied the roadworks. Although the area lay near recorded monuments, stripping the topsoil for the new slip road revealed no material of archaeological significance, according to the excavation report. [2] [3]
The Somerville estate woodland
Balrath Wood, also called Knockcomra locally, was once part of the larger Somerville estate. Some older trees survive, but most of the approximately twenty-hectare wood was replanted in 1969 with oak, beech, ash and spruce among its species. Meath County Council’s account describes a mixed woodland subsequently managed as a place for public enjoyment and learning, including a nature walk designed as an outdoor classroom. [4]
