Place & story

Fuller’s church and the older tower

J. F. Fuller designed Saint Patrick’s Church around 1896, incorporating a surviving medieval tower house at its western end. The tower rises in two stages, with pinnacles and battlements above the newer church. Rock-faced limestone walls, cut-stone dressings and slate roofs distinguish the nineteenth-century work. [2]

Glass, tracery and the entrance

The architectural inventory identifies stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. Carved limestone tracery fills the pointed windows, while strap hinges decorate the timber entrance door. At the graveyard entrance, octagonal limestone piers frame cast-iron gates, with turnstile steps beside them. These smaller details preserve the craftsmanship of the church’s later rebuilding. [2]
