Place & story
Saint Mary’s
Saint Mary’s Catholic church was built in 1834 on a cross-shaped plan, with a sacristy on its south side. Limestone dressings frame its pointed windows, where carved timber tracery surrounds stained glass. Mosaics and other interior details add colour to the relatively plain exterior. The church, graveyard, stone boundary walls and iron entrance gates form a coherent village landmark. [2]
A place for handball
The nearby handball alley dates from about 1920. Its H-shaped arrangement provided two courts, enclosed by rendered walls. Stone gate piers and double iron gates mark the entrance. The National Inventory recorded the alley as disused in its 2002 survey, preserving evidence of a sporting space once part of local social life. [3]
