Place & story

A new church in Lisglennon

Ballysakeery’s Church of Ireland building in Lisglennon was under construction in 1806 and completed in 1810. Supported by the Board of First Fruits, it combined a rectangular nave with a western entrance tower. Alterations followed in 1853–1854, including a chancel window designed by Joseph Welland. The church closed in 1980; its roofless remains preserve evidence of both the original building and later improvements. [2]

People & connections

Kathleen Lynn’s childhood home

Doctor Kathleen Lynn was born at Ballysakeery Glebe House in neighbouring Mullafarry in 1874. Her father, Robert Young Lynn, served as the parish rector. She later became chief medical officer with the City Hall garrison during the 1916 Rising. In 1919 she and Madeleine ffrench-Mullen founded Saint Ultan’s Children’s Hospital in Dublin. Her birthplace gives Ballysakeery a precise connection with her medical and political career. [3]

The glebe house survives neglect

The glebe house was built with a £400 grant and a £400 loan from the Board of First Fruits. After the last resident rector died in 1933, it passed into private ownership. The property later formed part of land acquired for the Asahi synthetic-fibre plant and deteriorated. Emergency repair grants in 2016 and 2017 supported efforts to preserve its surviving fabric, beginning another chapter in the building’s history. [3]
