Place & story
From Crossard to St Brigid’s
When Crossard school closed in December 1928, teaching transferred to Tooreen. St Brigid’s opened in 1929 with separate boys’ and girls’ schools. They amalgamated in 1949, becoming a mixed school with three teachers. Pupils from Falleighter joined in 1972 and from Carrownedan in 1975. The replacement school opened on 14 November 1997. [2]
Learning a new game
Michael Henry helped organise Tooreen Hurling Club in 1957. Recalling its formation for reporter Michael Commins sixty years later, he said only a few people at the initial meeting had played hurling. The first committee included Father James Horan as president, Chris Tuohy as chairman and Henry as secretary. [3]
