Place & story
The parish centre
In 1837 Samuel Lewis described Lobinstown as the name of a Catholic district covering Killeary, Syddan, Innismoth and Mitchellstown. He recorded chapels at Lobinstown and Heronstown. His account shows the village name serving a wider religious district, whose population and institutions should be distinguished from those of the village itself. [2]
Distances carved in stone
At Begsreeve, northeast of the village, a triangular granite milestone dates from about 1780. Its two inscribed faces point towards Drumconrath, Carrickmacross and Kingscourt in one direction, and Dublin, Slane and Collon in the other. The architectural inventory connects this small roadside landmark with the coaching era and coach-carried post. [3]
A ringfort seen in cropmarks
In Lobinstown townland, an archaeological record added in 2019 identifies a circular cropmark on a hilltop. About thirty metres across, it is defined by a partly traceable ditch and appears on aerial imagery from 1995 and 2018. The record credits Anthony Murphy with first reporting it; this is a modern identification of an older feature, rather than an excavated construction date. [4]
