Place & story
A school in 1837
Samuel Lewis listed a national school at Ballysloe in 1837, alongside schools at Clonimiclan and Gortnahoe. Together these three schools in Buolick parish taught about 180 boys and a hundred girls. Those figures describe the parish group rather than Ballysloe alone. The entry places schooling in the village firmly within the early nineteenth century, long before the careers of later pupils carried its name overseas. [2]
Patrick Joseph Lanigan
Patrick Joseph Lanigan attended Ballysloe National School before continuing his education in Thurles. Born in 1925, he was ordained for the Diocese of Sacramento at Thurles Cathedral in September 1951. He subsequently served parishes in California, including Angels Camp and Sacramento. The diocesan archives preserve an account of his life, recording Ballysloe as the place of his elementary education and linking the village’s school with the history of an Irish-born American priest. [3]
A cross-country treble
Ballysloe’s athletes achieved a notable run of success during the 1951–52 cross-country season. Reviewing the season in May 1952, The Gaelic Sportsman named Ballysloe among clubs that had won their county novice, junior and senior titles. Its report placed the Tipperary club alongside successful teams from Limerick, Cork and Wexford. The result records an achievement across three levels of competition rather than simply an individual runner’s victory. [4]
