Janet Dowdall remembers William Bathe
Janet Dowdall erected the marketplace cross in 1601 to commemorate her husband William Bathe of Athcarne. Its inscription identifies him as a justice of the Court of Common Pleas and records his death in October 1599. A small heart enclosed by a ring forms part of the decoration, interpreted by the council’s trail as an emblem of marital love. The monument gives a named woman a lasting place in the public space of the town.[2][3]
Saints on the wayside cross
The carving includes saints, angels and family arms on several faces. Figures identified in the monument record include Peter, Patrick, Cianán, Mary Magdalene, James, Thomas and George with the dragon. The Bathe arms accompany the memorial inscription. Repairs in 1810 and possible later additions altered the upper portions. The cross combines devotional imagery with the remembrance of one household.[3]
Judge Trotter’s house and sculpture
Duleek House became the principal residence of Stephen Trotter, a judge and member of parliament. The council’s trail associates the eighteenth-century house with his career and records a statue by the Flemish sculptor Peter Scheemakers. The statue formerly stood in the Church of Ireland porch and was later removed for safekeeping to the Law Society at Blackhall Place in Dublin. Its journey connects a local patron’s memory with another institutional setting.[2]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
