Saint Mary’s through successive repairs
St Mary’s Catholic Church was built by Fr Clune in 1833. The Clare stained-glass survey records later work in several phases: decoration in 1918, new floors and seating in 1924, and re-slating in 1980. The church is one of the two serving the parish of Sixmilebridge and Kilmurry. Its history is consequently one of continued repair and adaptation as well as the original construction campaign.[2]
Watson windows and a family’s remembrance
Two sanctuary windows, The Nativity and The Home at Nazareth, were made by Watsons of Youghal in 1924–25. Joseph P. Lynch of Walton Lodge ordered them in November 1924. Their inscriptions commemorate earlier generations: Nicholas Lynch and his wife, and Peter Lynch Fitzjames and Catherine. The survey connects the surviving glass with the firm’s archival order records, now held by the National Gallery of Ireland. These windows give named family associations to the church’s early twentieth-century refurbishment.[2]
A small village in the 1943 survey
Ralph Lucas’s Irish Tourist Association survey, dated June 1943, described Kilmurry as a separate village about three miles from Sixmilebridge. He recorded its Catholic church, mixed national school, a forge, public house and a post office handling letters. A hurling field served local practice, complementing the field at Sixmilebridge. This modest list preserves the village’s everyday functions at a particular moment: education, communication, metalworking and recreation beside the church.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
