Place & story

The hills before the abbey

The enclosures on the hills around Baltinglass belong to more than one prehistoric period. Survey and excavation have identified three large Early Neolithic enclosures, alongside later hillforts. Passage tombs, cursus monuments and other burial sites form part of this unusually concentrated landscape. Archaeologist James O'Driscoll's account of the 2022 LiDAR work describes how detailed terrain mapping has helped separate these phases. The hilltops preserve a history of settlement and ceremony reaching back to the first farming communities. [2]

People & connections

Dermot MacMurrough's foundation

Dermot MacMurrough, king of Leinster, founded Baltinglass Abbey in 1148. It belonged to the Cistercian network as a daughter house of Mellifont and later a mother house of Jerpoint. The surviving Romanesque church includes an aisled nave whose square and cylindrical piers alternate. Their carved bases and capitals give individual character to the arcade. Traces of the cloister survive too, while a narrow nineteenth-century Gothic tower replaced a later medieval tower, adding another period to the visible remains. [3]

Peter Byrne and Bridgett Tyrell's pupils

By 1841 Peter Byrne and Bridgett Tyrell were teaching in Baltinglass's established National School. Its classrooms used monitors: senior pupils received instruction and supervised groups of younger children. Pupils progressed through five books of increasing difficulty, learning through English. Although the national system offered schooling across denominations, local Catholic children generally attended this school while Protestant children went to a Church of Ireland Education Society school. The teachers' names and classroom arrangements bring the town's educational history into focus. [4]
