Place & story

A tower house and its enclosure

Barryscourt Castle was the main seat of the Barrys for several generations. Heritage Ireland places the tower house’s construction between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, during John Ciotach Barry’s lordship. The substantial residence stands within its defensive enclosure near Carrigtohill. Restored halls and chambers reveal the domestic scale of a building whose outer form still emphasises protection. [2]

Damage during rebellion

The Barrys supported the Fitzgeralds of Desmond during the late-sixteenth-century rebellions. They partly destroyed Barryscourt to prevent its capture by Walter Raleigh’s forces. The castle later suffered another attack during the Confederate Wars. Cannonballs preserved above the entrance are interpreted by the Office of Public Works as evidence of that seventeenth-century conflict. [2]

Gardens, furnishings and conservation

The Main Hall and Great Hall have been furnished to interpret the castle’s residential life. A herb and knot garden and orchard recreate elements of a sixteenth-century setting. These are modern restorations based on historical interpretation, adjoining the surviving masonry of the tower house. [2]

After closing in 2016 because of structural concerns, Barryscourt underwent a further conservation programme. The Office of Public Works announced its reopening in April 2025, describing work to safeguard the fabric and renew its interpretation. The reopening marked another stage in the building’s long sequence of damage, repair and adaptation. [3]
