Place & story
The school dated 1900
The former Camolin National School carries the date 1900 above its entrance. Its original three-bay arrangement was later extended, leaving a small school whose shape records successive demands for classroom space. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage notes surviving details including a granite door surround, slate roof and timber windows. These modest features make it a useful record of village education around the turn of the twentieth century, rather than simply another old building on the street.[2]
The estate stable block
Camolin Park's stable block dates to 1834. Its U-shaped plan has projecting gabled ends, with stonework and a slate roof giving an agricultural service building considerable architectural presence. The inventory records partial restoration in 2003 for a proposed new use. Despite the record's title, Camolin Park House, the building it describes is the stable block: it should not be mistaken for a surviving complete country house.[3]
Whites Wood and the changing forest
Camolin Wood lies on a low ridge about four kilometres north-west of the village. Coillte identifies it with Whites Wood on the Ordnance Survey map of 1839, when the woodland was entirely deciduous. Its later mixture of conifers and broadleaved trees marks a change in management and planting. A Millennium Forest and paths now give the woods a recreational role, adding another use to a landscape that has been mapped and managed across generations.[4]
Remembering the railway
Two murals unveiled in 2021 recalled Camolin station's operating years, 1867 to 1964. Artist Kate Kos created the works through a collaboration between St Pat's GAA and Camolin Development Association. Berry Carley, granddaughter of the last stationmaster, Patsy Kearney, attended the unveiling. This act of local commemoration links the railway's working history with families who remembered it, preserving a transport connection that had disappeared from daily village life.[5]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
