The victory on Oulart Hill
On 27 May 1798 rebels gathered on Oulart Hill after the outbreak of fighting at the Harrow. A force of North Cork Militia marched from Wexford to disperse them but suffered a devastating defeat. The National 1798 Rebellion Centre describes a rebel pike charge following unsuccessful militia volleys. The victory helped transform the Wexford rising: the rebels captured Enniscorthy the next day. Oulart’s significance therefore extends beyond the encounter itself to the momentum it gave the wider rebellion.[2]
Tulach a’ tSolais
Tulach a’ tSolais stands on Oulart Hill as a bicentenary memorial to 1798. Sculptor Michael Warren collaborated with architect Ronald Tallon on a work made from earth, concrete, granite and oak. A deep passage divides the grass-covered mound and opens its interior to daylight. Inside are two oak sculptures. Wexford County Council’s sculpture catalogue explains the title as Mound of Light; the passage and its changing light are central features of this deliberately abstract memorial.[3]
The 1998 commemoration
RTÉ’s report broadcast on 24 May 1998 records pipe and brass bands and as many as a thousand pike bearers marching through Oulart for the bicentenary commemoration. Participants then gathered on the hill. The report placed remembrance of the rebellion alongside the recent referendums endorsing the Good Friday Agreement. US ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith attended. The archive captures a particular moment when a local anniversary and hopes for contemporary peace shared the same public ceremony.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.

Settlement boundaries changed during this period. Differences may reflect boundary changes as well as population change. Where a 2011 legal-town-and-environs count is shown, it has not been recalculated onto the 2016 settlement boundary.
