Place & story
A market before the plantation
Tallow was already a significant settlement in the late thirteenth century. The Justiciar held court there in 1295, and officials were appointed to enforce currency regulations in 1299. The community also brought complaints over the administration of weights and measures. Waterford County Museum's researched account uses these records to show an active commercial settlement long before the Munster plantation. Later warfare transformed it: the English-planted town was abandoned and burned in 1598, interrupting a history that had already included centuries of trade and local administration.[2]

Richard Boyle's rebuilding and iron mills
Richard Boyle rebuilt Tallow as an English plantation town in the early seventeenth century. His diary and related records reveal a place combining ironworking with market, legal and domestic trades. A 1622 description counted about 150 houses and two iron mills employing local workers. Boyle arranged for a common brewer and presented Lady Carew with a pair of Tallow-made knives. The town's location near the navigable Bride also mattered: it provided access to Youghal for importing supplies and exporting goods, connecting the local industries with a seaport.[2]
The church on Chapel Street
The Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1826 and enlarged with a square tower in 1868. Its cruciform plan includes a bowed apse, expressed inside through an elaborate Gothic reredos and decorated vaulted ceiling. A gallery on fluted columns overlooks the nave. The architectural survey also identifies the entrance gates as part of the 1868 work, with sandstone piers and decorative ironwork. The church's carefully worked details and graveyard monuments preserve another period of local craftsmanship after the ironworking industries that shaped the earlier town.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
