Place & story
A castle built in several ages
Ardfinnan Castle commands the village and its river crossing, but its distinctive outline is the result of successive building campaigns. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage identifies an early thirteenth-century keep, a tower house of around 1450, and substantial eighteenth- and nineteenth-century additions. Later builders adopted battlements and narrow openings that echoed the medieval fabric. The site is traditionally associated with a castle founded by John in 1185, although that does not date all the standing buildings. Its appearance preserves both defensive architecture and the later ambition to make a castellated country house.[2]
The Mulcahy woollen enterprise
The history maintained by Ardfinnan Woollen Mills traces the modern enterprise to John Mulcahy's development of the business in 1869. It describes production expanding from blankets into tweeds and tailored clothing, with the river providing power. The same account records the closure of Mulcahy, Redmond and Company's manufacturing operation in 1973, after more than a century of employment. This industrial chapter gave Ardfinnan connections with clothing markets well beyond its immediate district. It should be distinguished from the much less securely documented claims of uninterrupted textile production reaching back to medieval religious houses.[3]
From kitchen furniture to video games
Engineer James F. Riordan's account of his work records another unexpected Ardfinnan industry. Murray Kitchens had contracted to manufacture wooden cabinets for Atari arcade games, including upright machines and table-shaped versions. Riordan describes reorganising the factory's layout and production methods to raise its output for the European market. His published account includes testimonials from Murray Kitchens managers identifying the Ardfinnan plant. This first-person evidence connects a local furniture-making business with the international video-game industry. The products described were the cabinets housing the games, a particular manufacturing role within a much larger electronics business.[4]
