Place & story

People & connections

Charles Kickham’s home town

Charles Kickham's family home and literary identity were closely associated with Mullinahone. His baptismal record places his birth near Cashel in 1828, despite older accounts naming Mullinahone itself. His father ran a drapery business, and the family participated in the political movements of the period. [2]

Bassett recorded Kickham's burial here in 1882 and a memorial fund supported by subscribers in Ireland, England and America. [3]

Trades recorded in 1889

His 1889 business list names coachbuilder John Fox and James Cahill at the creamery. It also recalls William Smith O'Brien's July 1848 visit before the rising near Ballingarry, placing national political events alongside the town's commercial life. [3]

Killaghy’s medieval and later parts

The architectural inventory distinguishes Killaghy's four-storey tower house, dated approximately to 1550, from the adjoining country house of around 1760. Its frontage was remodelled and an octagonal turret added around 1825. Battlements and Gothic details on the later house echo the defensive appearance of the older tower. Outbuildings and a walled garden complete the ensemble. These successive phases explain why Killaghy can look like one romantic castle while containing buildings designed for quite different ways of living. [4]
