Place & story

Ballyvongane National School

The village school dates from 1845. Its own history records refurbishment for the 150 th anniversary in 1995, followed by an extension completed in 2007. The additional accommodation included a classroom, resource room and staff facilities, while an older classroom became a general-purpose room. The extension was formally opened by Batt O’Keeffe in September 2010, continuing the use of a school site established in the nineteenth century. [2]

People & connections

Eighty years at the organ

Mary O’Regan retired as organist at Bealnamorrive church in 2025 after eighty years of service. A contemporary community report traced her beginning to 1945, when she was ten and learning music from Ballyvongane teacher Hannah O’Donovan. She took over when the previous organist moved away. The parish marked her retirement at Mass, followed by a gathering in the school, bringing the two institutions together in recognition of her contribution. [3]

Putting local history on stage

In 2024 Ballyvongane pupils wrote and performed A Week in Bealnamorrive Long Ago. Playwright Helen Hallissey facilitated the project, and local historian Peter Scanlon supplied information and photographs. The imagined week included butter churning, schoolyard games, a forge and a tavern singsong. Its performance for families was a modern act of historical interpretation, using drama to explore the work and social life of earlier generations. [4]
