Place & story
Childhood in Laughty Barr
Leitrim County Library identifies Corranmore as the district around Laughty Barr, between Kiltyclogher and Glenfarne. Seán Mac Diarmada was born there in 1883 to a family established locally since the eighteenth century. He entered Corracloona National School on 4 July 1888, and his name remained on its roll until July 1899. The school records provide a specific local foundation for his later public biography. [2]
From local schooling to revolutionary organisation
After time in Scotland, Mac Diarmada settled in Belfast in 1905, working as a tram conductor and barman while becoming involved in nationalist organisations. He moved to Dublin in 1907 and became a full-time organiser for the Irish Republican Brotherhood and manager of Irish Freedom. A signatory of the Proclamation and planner of the Easter Rising, he was executed at Kilmainham on 12 May 1916. [3]
The preserved family homestead
Mac Diarmada's home at Laughty Barr survives as a traditional cottage maintained in its historic condition. The Office of Public Works identifies it as the only surviving original homeplace of the seven Proclamation signatories. Its domestic setting connects the national story with the rural household in which he grew up. A separate museum and exhibition in Kiltyclogher village interprets his life beyond the cottage itself.
