Place & story

Before the housing estates

A 2025 architectural study prepared for Dublin City Council traces the Cromcastle Court area through nineteenth-century maps. Woodville House and Kilmore Cottage were both named on the Ordnance Survey map surveyed in 1836. Their grounds belonged to a landscape that remained largely rural before Dublin’s twentieth-century expansion. Kilmore Cottage later disappeared beneath Corporation housing, while Woodville House survived on the opposite side of Kilmore Road. [2]

A tree from an earlier garden

The same study identifies a mature cedar as a probable survivor of Kilmore Cottage’s garden. Its proposed retention offers a small connection between the earlier estate and the modern neighbourhood. During the 1950s and 1960s, private developers and Dublin Corporation built the surrounding suburb, replacing agricultural land with repeated two-storey house types, private gardens and a network of streets planned around increasing car use. [2]

A school for the new community

Scoil Fhursa’s own history dates its establishment in Kilmore West to the late 1960s, when it enrolled more than eight hundred and eighty boys. The school developed alongside Scoil Íde, the local girls’ school, as the new residential area acquired its institutions. The exceptionally large early enrolment gives a concrete sense of the demands placed on education during the suburb’s formative years, beyond the changes visible in roads and houses. [3]
