Place & story
Two cairns on the ridge
Carns Hill carries two substantial cairns about four hundred metres apart. The eastern monument stands on a natural summit ridge and measures roughly fifty-three by fifty-eight metres across, rising about seven and a half metres. Much of the surrounding ground falls away from it, strengthening its silhouette. The Office of Public Works records the cairn as a national monument in state ownership, part of an archaeological landscape close to Sligo town. [2]
A wooded urban hillside
The hill’s more recent landscape includes a forest plantation with trees of different ages and species. Coillte records both broadleaved trees, including oak, ash, birch and beech, and conifers such as Scots pine and spruce. Woodland paths connect this elevated ground with the Cleaveragh recreation area. Openings in the trees frame Sligo Bay, Lough Gill and the surrounding mountains, giving the ancient monuments a modern setting used for local recreation. [3]
Storm damage and repair
Storms in spring 2025 damaged the Carns Hill woodland and forced the walks to close. Sligo Walks reported in September that Coillte and council staff had removed unsafe trees and repaired the paths before reopening the forest. The work also renewed and slightly extended the walking routes and improved the Holywell Road car park. This episode records the continuing maintenance behind a landscape combining archaeological remains, forestry and public use. [4]
