Place & story
Reusing and restoring church furnishings
At Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea in nearby Sandymount, the parish history records how an earlier pulpit survives in another form. Parishioners commissioned the pulpit and altar rails in memory of Thomas Leahy after his death in 1880; marble from that pulpit was later incorporated into the ambo, retaining his memorial tablet. Another conservation project followed in 1995, when Stella Harte restored the seventeenth-century painting The Return from Egypt and it was repositioned within the church. [2]
