An Charraig
A recorded vernacular dwelling preserves the incremental growth of a rural home.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records a single-storey house in Carrick, Meenaclady, built around 1870 and extended at its northwestern end around 1910. Limewashed rubble walls and sliding sash windows retain its vernacular character. Blocked openings at the rear suggest that it may once have faced the opposite direction. The inventory also interprets the roof pitch as evidence of former thatch. These qualified observations, recorded in 2014, distinguish documented surviving fabric from interpretations of the house’s earlier arrangement. [2]
