Place & story
Corn, potatoes and clover
Lewis described about two-thirds of Shanagolden parish as cultivated, producing corn, potatoes and clover, with rough pasture occupying the remainder. He considered the land especially fertile near the town. The parish account therefore presents a surrounding farming landscape as well as the settlement’s long street. [2]
Mathematical schools for adults
Two mathematical schools for adult men had about twenty-five pupils in Lewis’s account. He separately recorded four private schools teaching approximately 150 children. The distinction preserves an unusual detail of local education before the Famine: instruction for adults appeared alongside the schools serving younger pupils. [2]
