Place & story

Opening the estate for development

Local historian John Lennon traces a turning point in Drummartin to Patrick Darcy's lease of the townland from the Fitzwilliam estate in 1781. A new road between Dundrum and Kilmacud followed around 1782, becoming Upper Kilmacud Road. Early development included Drummartin Castle, Campfield House and Campfield Terrace. Later leases extended building to the southern side of the road. [2]

Drummartin Castle

Drummartin Castle was a Georgian residence dating from around 1781, despite its medieval-sounding name. Its castellated frontage incorporated corner buttresses, broad Wyatt windows and a decorative entrance fanlight. The building was divided into separate residences in the twentieth century. It was demolished in 1984, and apartments subsequently occupied the site at Silver Birches opposite Airfield. [3]

Drummartin House and Saint Stephen’s School

A different property, Drummartin House, stood near the junction of Lower Kilmacud, Goatstown, Taney and Mount Anville roads. Built around 1800, it later accommodated Saint Stephen's School between 1950 and 1963. The local Stillorgan Genealogy and History project records repair work after vandalism in the 1960s and later use by people displaced from Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The house was eventually demolished. [4]
