Place & story

The castle and its settlement

Archaeologist Claire Walsh's 2008 report traced a settlement around Shankill Castle through historic maps. The Down Survey of 1656 depicted the castle as a manor belonging to the See of Dublin, with seventeen tenements nearby. Rocque's map still marked it in 1760. Walsh also recorded a former church site beside the castle entrance, where no visible remains survived. [2]

A residence rather than a tower house

Antoine Giacometti's 2024 survey, undertaken after vegetation removal, interpreted Shankill Castle as a small two-storey residential or manorial castle with an external first-floor entrance. He distinguished this form from a tower house. Much surviving masonry may date from the fifteenth century, although he stressed the uncertainty; a castle existed here in the thirteenth century. Nineteenth-century ovens were among its later alterations. [3]

An opening exposed during conservation

Conservation monitoring continued in 2025. Clearance near the eastern corner exposed a possible first-floor doorway leading towards the garderobe, bounded by rough granite jambs and subsequently blocked with brick. Giacometti could not assign it securely to a building phase. Other unexplained masonry strengthened the possibility that the ground-floor vault had been inserted into an earlier structure, showing how much of the castle's development remains to be resolved.
