Place & story
From mountain pasture to limestone quarries
Carlingford parish extended well beyond the town, taking in mountain-side commonage where poorer neighbours grazed cattle. Lewis distinguished this ground from Cooley’s productive cultivated land, naming farms at Wilville and Ballug. He also noted an absence of bog and consequent scarcity of fuel. Limestone quarries near the town sent much of their output northwards. His account presents a district drawing different resources from the mountainside, cultivated plain and rock beneath it. [2]
A castle serving the farm
At Templetown, Lewis recorded an old church and burial ground, with Ballug Castle nearby. He described a square structure with particularly thick walls and square turrets at opposite corners. By 1837 its lower part had been made into stables and the upper part into corn lofts. This contemporary description records agricultural reuse of a defensive building, rather than establishing that it retained those uses in later years. [2]
