Place & story

Lodgings for the spa visitors

Doddsborough formed part of Lucan’s eighteenth-century spa landscape. South Dublin Libraries’ architectural history dates the Crescent houses to about 1790, when they provided accommodation for visitors taking the waters. The earlier Georgian spa hotel, distinct from the later hotel building, was erected around 1795. By the 1852 valuation map, the resort had declined and the hotel was labelled as a school for clergymen’s sons, recording a striking change of use within the former visitor quarter. [2]

Annadale’s unusual roof

Annadale Cottage on the former main road through Doddsborough is a modest but unusual survival. The National Inventory dates the single-storey, three-bay house to about 1815. Its slate roof follows a U-shaped plan with a flat central valley and twin gables at the front. Recessed segmental arches frame the windows, while a fanlight sits above the panelled entrance. Despite later alterations, the cottage retains its original proportions and some early materials. [3]

From corn mill to Dodsboro House

A 2024 heritage assessment for the Lucan Demesne park entrance traced a vanished building on the Doddsborough side of Tobermaclugg stream. Nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey mapping showed a corn mill and a millpond, while the 1910 map labelled one of the buildings Dodsboro House. The assessment found no standing structure at the site. Historic maps therefore preserve evidence for an industrial use that is much less apparent in today’s landscape. [4]
