Place & story
An enclosure beneath the fields
Testing northwest of Cappagh Road in 2019 investigated an oval enclosure first recognised through aerial imagery and geophysical survey. Shallow ditches outlined a site roughly ninety metres across on a slight ridge. Excavator Liam Coen suggested an early medieval date from its form, although no datable artefacts were recovered. Pits and linear features inside could relate to farming, while the shallow surviving ditches showed how much later activity had reduced the remains. [2]
Heat-shattered stone
The same investigation found a separate burnt mound, or fulacht fiadh. Charcoal-darkened material contained many stones fractured by heat, spread over an area about fifteen metres by thirteen. Testing did not reveal a trough or associated pits, which could still have lain beneath the mound. The report therefore recorded the physical remains while leaving important details of their arrangement and use unresolved. [2]
Walls and pathways at Ballycoolin Road
Excavation at Ballycoolin Stadium Business Park in spring 2025 added to evidence for medieval settlement around Cappoge. Archaeologists uncovered a stretch of stone wall, a stone pathway, pits and agricultural furrows. Medieval and later pottery came from most of the features. Earlier investigations nearby had already identified structures and habitation remains; the new work was reported as another part of that larger settlement, with detailed dating and environmental analysis still pending.
