Place & story
A school for the growing district
Scoil Nano Nagle opened on 3 September 1975 in Bawnogue. Its own historical background describes a junior school for boys and girls, sharing a campus with Talbot Senior National School. Children completed second class at Nano Nagle before moving to senior classes at Talbot. The school’s later account also records an Early Start preschool unit. The shared site reflects the practical organisation of education in a district whose housing and population grew rapidly during the decade. [2]
The Church of the Transfiguration
The Church of the Transfiguration opened in 1980, following a campaign to provide a church for the newly developed area. Archbishop Dermot Ryan laid its foundation stone in March that year. The parish’s account records that Pope John Paul II had blessed the stone at Maynooth. The building gave the growing community a permanent place of worship, following the wider expansion of Clondalkin during the 1970s. [3]
The Spiritans arrive
In 1989 the Archbishop of Dublin asked the Spiritans, also known as the Holy Ghost Fathers, to take responsibility for the parish. Three priests moved into its presbytery that September. The parish identifies James O’Sullivan as its first parish priest, before the Spiritan period. These successive arrangements chart how religious institutions followed the new residential neighbourhood, from its first local leadership to a congregation with a wider missionary network. [3]
