Place & story

Coláiste Éanna’s first class

Coláiste Éanna opened on 8 September 1967 with twenty-seven first-year pupils, serving Ballyroan and neighbouring parishes. Its first principal, Brother John Mahady, taught most subjects in the single classroom initially in use; Brother James Maxwell came each morning to teach French. A lay principal was appointed in 1986. The school's own history records later extensions, including a sports hall completed in 2007, tracing the growth of an institution established as the suburb expanded. [2]

A courtyard around an oak

Ballyroan's parish centre, completed in 2010 by Box Architecture, was designed around internal courtyards, with an existing oak tree in the largest. A substantial pivoting timber door marks the entrance, while carefully placed windows balance outward views with private rooms. The project formed part of a wider arrangement of church, community centre and library around shared space. Its courtyards and connecting routes give a deliberate shape to meeting, gathering and movement through the neighbourhood centre. [3]

The library’s new building

The present Ballyroan Library opened on 18 February 2013 on Orchardstown Avenue. Alongside its reading and lending functions, it provided a lecture room, exhibition space, digital training suite and dedicated research room. The library also holds the Rathfarnham local-studies collection. These facilities place the preservation and study of the area's past inside a building serving the everyday needs of the surrounding suburb, rather than reserving local history for a separate museum.
