Place & story
The bawn wall
The archaeological survey records a substantial stone wall extending west-southwest from Castlejordan’s fortified house. About forty metres long and reaching roughly four metres high, it formed part of a bawn, or defensive enclosure. A nearby tower house may have occupied its southwest corner, but no connecting wall survives there to prove that arrangement. A later walled garden occupies much of the former enclosure, showing another use of the space. [2]
A date without a certain building
A small limestone plaque bearing the date 1632 is built into the rear part of the present farmhouse. The survey notes that it could originally have belonged to either the fortified house or the tower house nearby. Its survival supplies a dated piece of local building history, but its uncertain provenance prevents it from securely dating either ruined structure or identifying its builder. [3]
