Ballymoe

Béal Átha Mó

Ballymoe’s connections extend far beyond its Galway setting. Edward Flanagan regarded it as his hometown, while a former police building commemorates Éamonn Ceannt. The old railway complex nearby records another connection between the village and the wider world.

Place & story

People & connections

Edward Flanagan’s hometown

Edward Flanagan, the founder of Boys Town in Nebraska, was born in nearby Leabeg, County Roscommon, in 1886. Boys Town’s own historical account emphasises that he nevertheless considered Ballymoe his hometown. He attended school outside the village and emigrated to America in 1904. Later visits in the 1930s and 1940s renewed that connection. His story belongs to the area on both sides of the county boundary, rather than requiring his birthplace to be moved into the Galway village. [2]

People & connections

The building marking Ceannt’s birthplace

A limestone plaque on Ballymoe’s former constabulary building identifies it as the birthplace of Éamonn Ceannt, one of the signatories of the 1916 Proclamation. The two-storey building later served as a Garda station. Timber sash windows and a slate roof retain its domestic scale, while a more formal limestone doorway was added for the public office around 1935 to a Board of Works design. Its changing uses connect a personal memorial with the history of rural policing. [3]

The old station across the county boundary

Ballymoe’s former railway station stands nearby at Cleaboy in County Roscommon. The station master’s house and adjoining ticket office date approximately to 1860. Rock-faced limestone, worked window surrounds and a Tudor-arched doorway show the care invested in a small rural station. Across the tracks, the goods shed and water tower complete the railway group. The inventory records the station as closed while the railway remained operational, distinguishing the surviving buildings from the continuing life of the route. [4] [5]
