Place & story
Two buildings on the map
The University of Galway’s Landed Estates research identifies both Glinsk Castle and a substantial neighbouring house on the 1838 Ordnance Survey map. By the 1890s, the mapped house had disappeared while the castle remained. Griffith’s Valuation recorded buildings at the site as a herd’s house, valued at £1 15s and held by Allan Pollok. [2]
The estate changes hands
The Burke family’s Glinsk and Creggs estates were advertised for sale in 1853 and purchased by Pollok. The Glinsk holding comprised 3,361 acres in Ballynakill parish, distinct from the larger Creggs estate in Kilbegnet. The surviving castle therefore belonged to a much wider landed property whose ownership and residential arrangements changed during the nineteenth century. [3]
