Place & story
The farming parish
Samuel Lewis's 1837 account distinguished Oldcastle's 1,531 townspeople from a parish population of 4,718. The wider parish, also called Clolyne in his entry, comprised 7,559 statute acres measured for the tithe assessment. Tillage and pasture occupied roughly equal shares. Local limestone supplied another trade: stone from parish quarries travelled into County Cavan, where it was burned to produce lime. [2]
Three generations at Millbrook
At Millbrook, John Henry had established flour and oatmeal mills in 1777. Lewis found the business under Henry's grandson, W. Henry, employing fifty people. Water supplied from Loughcrew provided power rated at sixty horsepower. The mills stood within a two-hundred-acre estate, connecting grain processing with an agricultural property rather than simply with the town's market buildings. [2]
Lawrence Gibson’s educational legacy
Lawrence Gibson, a native of the parish who made his fortune in London, left an endowment for a school educating both boys and girls. Lewis described its substantial building, gardens and playground on land supplied by J. L. W. Naper. Built at a reported cost of £6,000, it could accommodate one thousand children; his account put average attendance at eight hundred. [2]
